The European Sand Sculpting Championships, hosted in Jesolo (Venice) Italy, Was held June 13- 17. The display was up for two months (exhibition work began even earlier in June). Public voting for the People's Choice Award was ongoing for the entire run of the show, which closed last week. The Peoples Choice award winner has now been tabulated, after all visitors had a chance to see & vote for their favorite. All awards as follows:

*Peoples Choice Award: Leonardo Ugolini, Italy.
*Sculptors Choice Award: Enguerrand David, Belgium.
*Jury Awards: 3rd Place: Ilya Shanin, Russia. 2nd Place: Leonardo, Ugolini, Italy. 1st Place and a seeding at the World Championships in Florida next November: Susanne Ruseler, Holland.

*Congratulations to all who participated!
And many thanks to the host & sponsors, the City Of Jesolo!

Solo Masters Contest: 12 June: Competitors arrive in Venice. 13 June: Solo competition sculpting begins 08:00. 17 June Solo competition sculpting ends 18:00. 21 June: Awards presentation 18:30.	Art students Open Contest: 13 June: Student competition begins 12:00. 22 June: competition ends 18:00. The art students act as helpers and assistants to the masters in exchange for learning about sand sculpture for college credit. SOLO MASTERS CONTEST: FORMAT, RULES & CRITERIA

FORMAT:

EuropaSand is the European Sand Sculpting Championships.
It is an invitational sand sculpting event.
There are displays of amazing sand sculpture by professional masters in: Solo, Doubles and Team divisions, but only the solos is a competition this year. The doubles and team sculptures are only for exhibition this year.

Master level (professional) sand sculptors from all over the world may be considered for inclusion in the event, but this year, 11 carvers from Europe (only one artist from any particular country) and 1 artist from Asia are invited to compete.

All contestants receive a generous & uniform working wage as well as all typical expenses of travel and hospitality being arranged and paid for them, including private accommodations and three meals per day in fine hotels just a few minutes walking distance to the event site. One free (comp) day is also offered. Personal guests & family members of contestants are welcome at market price for the expenses and are also welcome at all event functions, free of charge.

Contestants design their own composition free of any theme, with the stipulation that nudity is allowed, but pornography is prohibited.

The contestants may design their own custom compacted blocks of sand ("Poundups") within preset parameters and limitations (see Rules).

Poundups are erected prior to the artists arrival.

There are 40 mandatory carving hours, on a prescribed schedule. (No flex time).

There are art student helpers who are providing assistance at the event in exchange for learning about sand sculpture and receiving college credit. They may assist the artists in removing forms and shoveling sand out of their plot. These student helpers will also compete in their own contest, and will be judged by the masters.

All sculptures are completed, viewed and judged "in the round" but the artists are not required to utilize all the sand originally in their plot (excess sand can be removed) but more sand may not be added. They must however finish all surfaces of whatever sand they end up with.

There is a panel comprised of 7 judges whom will determine the top three final ordinals for the "Jury Award"

The judges all have sand sculpture experience. Four are professionals & three are amateurs.

The judging process is based on criteria provided by the director of the World Championships of Sand Sculpture (Charlie beaulieu). This criteria was also provided to the contestants prior to their designing the sculptures.

All judges will rank all the contestants independently of each other, first. Then they tabulate and collate their individual findings to calculate and if desired by any, deliberate to determine the top six places as a group. All judges will then judge only those six sculptures, again using the same method of computation, tabulation and deliberation, to end up with the final top three ordinals.

Additionally, there will be a single determination amongst the contestants themselves for a "Sculptors Choice Award." There will also be a "People's Choice Award" determined by festival viewers which will be tabulated and announced at the end of the run of the festival August 07.

There will be medals for 1, 2 & 3rd places in the Jury Awards and one medal each for Sculptors Choice Award and Peoples Choice Award (people's choice award will be sent via mail 8 weeks later).

The first place winner of the "Jury Awards" will win an all expense paid trip to, and a berth in, The World Championship Sand Sculpting Solo Division held in Fort Myers Beach, Florida USA in November, 2011. This prize to be awarded and facilitated by the World Sand Sculpting Championship organization and director Mr. Charlie Beaulieu.

RULES:

Only one master sculptor is allowed in the plot.

Helpers may assist in removing forms, shoveling sand and anything except finish carving.

Sealing spray must be applied to all finished surfaces and may be done any time.

No additives may be combined with the material you are provided.

No power tools inside the plot. Exception: screw guns (for removing wires.)

Finished works will be viewed from all angles, and judged "in the round"

Contestants may remove sand from their plots, but no additional sand may be brought in.

All forms are to be removed prior to the end of competition.

No artificial supports, decorations, color or special effects allowed.

Any hand tool may be used.

Contestants are required to be on site for all scheduled 40 work hours. No flex times.

All contestants are required to wear shoes at all times.

The sponsors, have final approval and veto power over all aspects of the festival and competitions.

THE ART STUDENT HELPERS

Besides the international masters carving great works in sand, -and in purely physical terms, there is still an awful lot to do in putting on a sand sculpture show. Technical considerations aside, it really comes down to a lot of hard work. To accomplish these tasks efficiently, volunteers, or paid staff are most commonly employed. Here in Jesolo however, we reach out to up and coming artists by way of the Academy of Art in Venice.

In exchange for their labors, the dozen or so students we get for ten days or so each year, get crash course on the job training about the craft of modern sand sculpture, that also counts as credit toward their schoolwork. Each year the students compete by developing their end piece to be ready by the end of the show, to be judged by the visiting masters.

As is the case in school years settings, we generally get some students from the freshman through senior years. And we definitely like to farm the talent we get. This year in fact, the site manager and my personal assistant, Ms. Elena Lana is one of the student helper/apprentice program alumnus (2006-2009). Mille Grazie Ele!
